From the Author
I hope you find this book to be interesting and useful!
My hope is that The Scarred Soul will help educate people on the topic of
self-inflicted violence. There are numerous activities designed to help you
better understand and cope with this difficult issue. Therapists, friends and
family members of people who engage in self-inflicted violence can also benefit
from reading this book. I wrote this book because the topic is so misunderstood
and largely ignored. I hope you find it useful.

I am a cutter. I can not even begin to describe how
excellent this book is and how much it has helped me. I thoroughly recommend it
to self-harmers, family&friends and professionals alike. Everyone can learn
from it. I have spent a lot of money of self-help books to help me to overcome
and understand my problem and this one is undoubtedly the best. Not only does it
help you and those close to you to understand this very misunderstood behaviour
but it also helps you to live with, understand and try and get over your
behaviour. It isn't at all forceful and is instead compassionate and tells you
to do things in your own time. If you're not ready to stop doing this then
don't. It helps you to realise that self-harm isn't all bad, that you shouldn't
feel guilty about it, because without it you probably couldn't have survived but
helps you to realise that there are other alternatives and overcome it in time.
Thank you Tracy Alderman!

As the Development Coordinator of a self harm
voluntary group I want to recommend this book for anyone who suffers from
deliberate self harm. Tracy Alderman has written this book very well, it has
self help techniques and explains all aspects of why you might self harm and
what you can do about it. On completion of this book you will have learned
something new about how self harm relates to your life.
incredible, 28 March, 2001
I have bought most of the self-harm books available
but continue to re-read this one. It is full of activities which enable you to
stand back and examine your behaviour and realise personal triggers and people
who may provoke you. This is written with a depth, compassion and understanding
I have yet to find anywhere else.

Alderman has thoroughly researched this topic and
offers both long term and short term practical advice in a straight-forward
sometimes humorous way.
There is a logical progression through which you
can identify if you self harm, what your rituals and reasons are and how you can
consequently change these. There is also advice about talking to others and a
section for friends and family - making it a good book to lend to other people.
