Believe - Gloucestershire Area

Post by braveheart »

Hello looking for someone who lives in Gloucestershire area who may be interested in becoming involved in a new project 'Believe'

For personal safety reasons it would be advised that you are in a 'stable' point in your healing journey.

The time you give would be on a voluntary basis.

Hoping to get some replies :)

Believe will be initially a 'friendship group' for ongoing support with day to day living.
As survivors of abuse the long term effects it leaves behind can often be debilitating (as we know).
We can often feel isolated.
Although I believe online a great support I personally would like face to face support also.

My vision is to have a permanent base for Believe where survivors can meet socially. I would like to be able to offer things such as art therapy, meditation and a sign posting resource onto other support. By educating and supporting survivors we can empower them and hopefully enable them to lead healthy, fulfilling, happy lives. Would like to have day trips, meals out and fun therapeutic activities.

Would like to educate and raise awareness among healthcare professionals ie: GPs. Possibly compile a leaflet to support how they manage patients that come in and disclose abuse. I was told 'that's in the past and you need to get on with your life now' by one GP. As a qualified nurse myself i know more can be done with health care to support survivors.

Would like eventually to be able to offer support through the court process too.

Big visions and ideas but......got to start small.

So a group that will meet monthly at first. If we are used by survivors and the need is there we will grow.

Hope this explains a bit more about my vision.

Mission statement;

Believe is passionate about breaking the isolation felt by adult survivors of abuse. By raising public
awareness of the long term effects of childhood abuse and by supporting and empowering victims,
we aspire to enable survivors to lead fulfilling, healthy and happy lives.

I think this is a great project. I am a strong believer in group support as long as it is correctly modorated. The overall aim should be "to move on and thrive". It should encourage group members to move foreward, not nessessarily live in the past or just accept what has happened to them.

I visit the area once a year (Forest of Dean) and would like the oportunity of meeting up and moving foreward. But I do have reservations!!!

Stay safe.

Thanks and Totally get that tracker.
Our own personal safety should be priority.

I am working in collaboration with other existing groups like domestic violence who are obviously working within safe boundaries etc and are a great support :)

Hoping it will be a success but only time will tell xxx

What a fantastic idea Braveheart.
Really wish I lived nearby, as I would love to be a part of this sort of project,
a support group badly needed in all areas.
Sadly I am many many miles away.

That's a relief as I also had some concerns about therapy being engaged in without proper boundaries.
I'm not currently in your area but I'm hopefully moving to Bristol later on this year so I'll definitely get in touch.
I have experience running OT sessions and creative writing workshops and I'd love to help out :)
