People should “choose to be around those who honestly fail [them], not those who dishonestly deny they hurt [them] and have no intent to do better” (Boundaries, Dr. Henry Cloud). There is a grounding effect that comes from acknowledging basic human fallibility. It helps us recognize our own propensity to fail another in some way. It does not signify that the predisposition to harm others should become the status quo in relationships. I've struggled for so long, as long as I can remember, at least since I was fostered, age 15/16, with the feelings of loyalty vs hatred towards/against my mother.
All I wanted, all I needed, was acknowledgement, apology and a promise to try to be an ally, if she couldn't be a mother. Just an acknowledgement.
What I got was denial, victim blaming and a smear campaign that made her entire family blame me and pity her.
I don't understand.
All I ever wanted was a mum who loved me.
That article really helped.
