Treatment
Inpatient Care
Intensive inpatient treatment programmes, which can include detoxification, are available from N.H.S., private and voluntary sectors. Duration varies from 4 weeks to 6 months dependent on individual need and programme options at the selected facility. Assessment should be sought in order to identify appropriate treatment. See the Getting Help page for providers.
Detoxification
Detoxification is a process of facilitating safe withdrawal from drugs or alcohol. Withdrawal without medical assistance can be dangerous or life threatening (particularly in the case of alcohol) in some cases and medical advice should always be sought before undertaking it alone. It is advisable to make contact with your GP in the first instance. Detoxification centres are provided by public, private and voluntary agencies. Services will vary according to your area. Local telephone directories should list help services or see the Getting Help page for contact details.
One to One Counselling
This service is provided by some GP surgeries, voluntary organisations and private sector providers. As the name suggests it is a less intensive therapy usually involving sessions of about one hour per week. This is also offered as an addition to other programmes. More information can be found in the Therapy Section.
