Understanding the Drama Triangle: A Tool for Survivors of Abuse
The Drama Triangle, introduced by Stephen Karpman and explained in detail in the Survivors section of our website, is a powerful tool for understanding the dynamics of victimhood and how we unconsciously play roles of victim, rescuer, and persecutor in our lives. This concept helps survivors of abuse recognize patterns of behaviour that keep them stuck in a cycle of pain and suffering.
By learning to identify and shift these roles, survivors can begin to take responsibility for their own healing and move towards becoming “Thrivors” – individuals who not only survive but thrive despite their past experiences. The Drama Triangle serves as a guide to break free from the “shame machine” and reclaim control over one’s life.
